Karna’s Wife: The Outcast’s Queen | Kavita Kane | Book Review

Jun 20, Aditya Choppa rated it it was ok. A classic retelling which narrates the events of Mahabharata with great detail and different perspective.

We see the whole thing from the pov of someone close to Karna. Draupadi was wronged, Uruvi wasn’t. The story is about A Kshatriya princess, Urvi who gets married to Karna, the son of the Surya qheen Kunti but was quren by the mother at the time of the birth and later adopted by a lowly charioteer.

So, 4 it is! The sense objects turn away by not feeding on them by the embodied, although the taste may not be given up.

However, this different attempt portraying the ouutcasts of Karna’s wife’s eye is a brilliant attempt. The conflict within her between her unconditional love for Karna and his outcwsts behavior towards Draupadi at the dice game in the palace of Hastinapur has been well portrayed.

And when someone attempts retelling a story from an epic such as the Mahabharata, the reactions are likely to be polarized – either one enjoys it immensely or does Retelling a known story comes with its own advantages and disadvantages. The moment she chooses Karna, there comes a veil between her and Hatinapur.

Mahabharata is a rich epic with so many threads in the story line that can outcaste many different perspectives seen through the eyes of different characters. Kavita is at her best as she builds the character of Karna.

She is a mother of two teenage daughters and currently lives in Pune. Usually delivered in days? Of course, sentimental admirers of the tragic hero will instantly get charged at such narrative, but I, for one, was extremely annoyed.

That is why, she makes at least four different characters chant how Karna’s conduct was “justified” and only an “outburst” bcoz he was rejected for his caste an ooutcasts, which has been officially identified as a later addition to Vyas’ Sanskrit text.

It was quite refreshing to hear a feminist voice in the Mahabharat setting where most of the women were used as pawns quesn play things. I love reading PoV versions of Mahabharata, and since Karna is a very intriguing character, I thought this PoV from his wife would be great. We often fail wkfe see the other side of it which is tragedy, helplessness, and grief. And one can’t help comparing it to the ‘Palace of Illusions’ the view from Draupadi’s eyes When such a man withdraws his senses from their objects as a tortoise withdraws its limbs, his consciousness is established.

Draupadi contributed substantially to the war, Uruvi wanted to prevent it at all cost. But she was also extremely naive. Even after losing everything, Karna lived on. I decided to buy the book later, but in those days I couldn’t stop myself from thinking about the book and Urvi.

Many such episodes which directly affect her, but on which she has no control over, are beautifully narrated. I wish the author had delved into Duryodhana and his family a little more.

And on I still am not sure if the protagonist of this book is actually a character from the biggest epic of Indian mythology, for I haven’t heard of the name Uruvi before Also the same rehashing of how great Karna was was not needed in every other chapter.

And then came the answer, the chapter that had the suyamvar. You can’t help but fall in love with Karna. Honestly embracing the mistake as a mistake without such forced justifications would have made the novel more genuine and honest, and added integrity to it. For the matter it tried to convey entirely too many pages were written. Thanks for telling us about the problem.

Uruvi is a silent witness to the strength and valour of Karna, his immeasurable love for Krishna and the unfortunate end he meets with. Its a refreshing take on ‘Mahabharata’ the so quee ‘Dharma Yudha’ where I believe outcastx existence of “Dharma and Neeti’ is quite questionable. Loved everything abt it She sometimes wished she was more thick-skinned, so that she could see nothing, feel nothing.

This is a character you do not encounter in mainstream narration of the Mahabharata.

Aug 26, Bharath Ramakrishnan rated it it was amazing. Karna’s story is heart breaking I am speechless and teary-eyed!! I relived the memories of reading Twilight while reading the initial chapters as Uruvi pines for Karna She’ll definitely give tough competition to Bella on how much one cab get obsessed about a guy. There were a few good things thhe the book and one of those is the main protagonist Uruvi.

If you have already seen my previous stories, you know then how much I love the writing style of kavitakane. Yes, I was being unfair to the author but she effortlessly takes you through the sad, breath taking journey of Karnathe unsung hero of Mahabharata, mighty feared warrior who sacrificed to live by his words and to be loyal to his wronged friend.

After a really long time.
