Seth uses the voice of these two animals to let out his frustrations and reveals to the reader his aching heart at the sight of continued deforestations.

The Elephant and the Tragopan. Have just discovered your herd today and this is my second comment. Vikram Seth rewrote a number of folk tales from India, China, Greece and the Trom in rhyming couplets and ended off with two fables in the same style of his own creation. I have not read it.

All the bloated prose-when he writes fiction-melds into pithy turns of exquisite phrase. I memorized the poem about the crocodile’s wife on the way back adn Delhi and home after six months of traveling in Thefe.
The Eagle and the Beetle. The final story in the collection – the longest too – is The Elephant and the Tragopan. No matter what the mood, I feel these tales in verse will leave you with a smile. So short that it can easily be read in one beqstly session and so enjoyable that it is difficult to put down, this collection of fables adds to Seth’s oeuvre an added dimension.
All the tales contain wit, wisdom and whimsy in roughly equal measure, with the final one a particular highlight and parable for our times, to be ignored at our peril. And so it went on until all ten of these beastly tales were born”.
Quite obviously, as Seth himself says, his decision to write this Jungle book fable was an impulsive one, prompted by a hot, sleepy day. Each poem is in rhymed couplets and taken “from here and there”: Travels Through Sinkiang and Tibet which won Vikram Seth is an Indian poet, novelist, travel writer, librettist, children’s writer, biographer and memoirist.
Hard to believe these were written more than two decades ago!
